Contemporary art is inherently harder to survey than historical traditions: it is still happening, it is unevenly documented, much of it exists in ephemeral exhibitions and artist-run spaces, and the secondary literature is thin compared to what exists for thangka painting or Pahari miniatures. Where I am confident of facts – names, institutions, broad trajectories – I state them plainly. Where I am less certain – specific dates, exhibition titles, whether a project is still active – I flag the uncertainty.
